Boktai is one of those weird, brilliant Game Boy Advance games that actually makes you go outside—no joke. You play as Django, a vampire hunter who relies on sunlight to power his gun, and here’s the twist: the cartridge has a real sunlight sensor. If you’re playing in a dark room, good luck—your shots barely tickle enemies, and the undead get way more aggressive.
At first, I thought the gimmick would get old fast, but it’s surprisingly tense. You’ll catch yourself angling the GBA toward windows just to recharge mid-dungeon, or hoarding "sun batteries" for late-night sessions. The isometric levels are packed with little secrets, and the bosses? They’re these massive, screen-filling immortals that feel impossible until you figure out their patterns (and get enough sunlight).
It’s clunky in that early-2000s way, but there’s nothing else like it—even now. Just don’t expect to play it properly under a blanket at midnight.
