Game Overview

Boulder Dash came to the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990, published by First Star Software. It was a solid puzzle game for its time, fitting right in with the kind of methodical, screen based challenges that were common on the platform. You don't get a grand story or elaborate cutscenes; it's just you, some dirt, and a lot of falling rocks.

You control a little guy named Rockford, digging through caves to collect a required number of diamonds before the timer runs out. The core of the game is manipulating the environment: you tunnel through soft dirt, but if you dig out the ground under a boulder, it falls. This can crush enemies or clear a path, but it can also crush you if you're not careful. Butterflies and fireflies add another layer of danger, as touching them is fatal. The pacing is deliberate, forcing you to plan each move because one wrong dig can collapse a section and trap you. It feels tense and satisfying when a plan comes together, but brutally punishing when it doesn't.
