Dodge angry food as a tiny chef, dropping burger parts to squash enemies while scrambling up ladders—those pickles are faster than they look. The pixel art’s still got charm, especially when your chef’s legs stretch like taffy mid-climb.

Burger Time, released in 1982 by Data East and playable today via MAME, is a straightforward arcade game from an era when simple concepts ruled. It doesn't try to be epic; it's just you, a chef, and a lot of angry food on a series of platforms. The graphics are basic, the sounds are simple beeps, and the goal is clear from the first moment you drop a coin in.
You control Chef Peter Pepper, and your job is to build burgers by walking over the individual ingredients (buns, patties, lettuce, tomato) on each level. The main twist is that you can't fight the enemies (Mr. Hot Dog, Mr. Egg, Mr. Pickle) directly. Instead, you drop sections of burger onto them from above to temporarily squash them, or lure multiple enemies onto the same platform piece before dropping it to take them all out at once. The pacing is frantic; you're constantly scrambling up and down ladders while being pursued, and the enemies get quicker and more numerous as you progress. It feels like a tense, comical kitchen panic translated perfectly into game form.
