Cactus, released in 2013 for the Arcade platform, was developed by Jonatan Söderström and Dennis Wedin. It arrived during a period when small, experimental games were gaining traction, offering a break from the more polished, mainstream titles of the time.
You control a sentient cactus navigating a hostile desert, shooting needles at enemies like snakes and aggressive tumbleweeds while avoiding obstacles such as rolling rocks. The main goal is simply to survive as long as possible, with the screen scrolling automatically and hazards increasing in speed and number. Signature mechanics include panic shooting when overwhelmed, dodging in tight spaces, and encountering absurd elements like vultures that seem to mock your failures. The pacing is frantic, and the difficulty escalates quickly, making each attempt feel both chaotic and darkly humorous. It feels like trying to outrun a sandstorm with a peashooter.
