Play Castlequest Online
NES sequel to The Castle—100 tricky rooms to navigate, color-coded keys, and the same old princess-rescuing routine (but way more puzzles).

Castlequest, released by Jaleco for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1986, is a methodical puzzle adventure that stands apart from the more action-heavy titles of its era. It is a sequel to an earlier game called The Castle, but it carves its own identity with a focus on deliberate exploration and mental challenges rather than reflexes or combat. You won't find many enemies to slash here; the real adversary is the labyrinth itself.
You control a knight tasked with rescuing a princess from a hundred-room castle. The core gameplay involves moving screen by screen, collecting color-coded keys to open matching doors, and solving environmental puzzles. There is no traditional combat; instead, you use a bow with limited arrows to activate switches from a distance or clear minor obstacles. The pacing is slow and thoughtful, demanding careful observation and mapping to avoid getting hopelessly lost. Progress feels earned through patience and logic, making each new section a quiet victory.
