Champion of the Raj is one of those old-school Amiga strategy games that somehow makes managing taxes and troop movements feel exciting. You pick a faction—British, French, or one of the local powers—and try to take over India in the 1800s. At first, it’s all about balancing your budget: do you spend money on better guns for your soldiers, or try to keep the people happy so they don’t revolt?
But here’s the fun part—it’s not just dry strategy. Every now and then, you’ll get thrown into these weird little arcade challenges, like racing elephants or hunting tigers, which actually decide whether you win over a new territory. And if you capture an enemy palace? Yeah, there’s another mini-game waiting. It’s unpredictable in the best way.
I remember playing as the Maruthras and realizing too late that I’d neglected my economy—half my army deserted because I couldn’t pay them. Lesson learned. The game keeps you on your toes.
