Play Chequered Flag Online
White-knuckle arcade racing where you wrestle a slippery car through brutal turns while AI drivers try to wreck you—miss an arrow warning and you're kissing the wall. Finish a lap for extra time, but your car degrades into a wobbly mess if you crash too much.

Chequered Flag came out in 1988 as an arcade game from Sinclair Research Ltd. It was one of the later releases for the ZX Spectrum, a machine known more for its quirks than raw power, and it tried to push what that hardware could do with 3D racing. You could tell they were aiming for something more ambitious than the flat, top-down racers that were common at the time.
You control a Formula One style car from a first-person perspective, wrestling with the steering to keep it on a narrow, winding track. The main objective is simple: complete laps before your timer runs out. Two mechanics define the experience. Bright arrows flash on the track to warn you of sharp upcoming turns, and missing one usually means a crash into the barrier. Your car also degrades with each collision; after too many hits, it handles like a wobbly shopping trolley, making clean driving nearly impossible. The game is brutally difficult, demanding perfect memorization of the course. It feels like a constant fight against both the clock and the car's own fragility.
