Game Overview

Okay, so Chip to Dale no Daisakusen—Japan’s name for Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers—is way more fun than it has any right to be. You play as those tiny Disney chipmunks, and instead of just running and jumping, you’re constantly picking up boxes (and sometimes each other) to chuck at enemies or stack into makeshift platforms. It sounds silly, but there’s something weirdly satisfying about lobbing a crate at a cat’s face.

The co-op is where it really shines, though. My friend and I kept accidentally throwing each other into pits at first, but once we got the hang of it, we were pulling off dumb little stunts like chipmunk ladder climbs or using one another as projectile weapons. The levels get surprisingly creative too—one minute you’re bouncing on gears in a factory, the next you’re crammed into a soda can flying through the air. The music’s stupidly catchy, and the whole thing just feels like the cartoon, right down to the way Chip adjusts his hat when he stands still.

Honestly, it’s one of those NES games that holds up just because it’s so dang charming. Even the box-throwing mechanic stays fun the whole way through.
