Clutch Hitter came out in 1985 from Sega, one of those arcade cabinets that tried to pull you in with a big, colorful screen and a bat you could actually swing. You control a batter, stepping up to the plate against a series of pitchers. The main goal is simple: hit the ball, get on base, and score runs. The signature mechanics involve timing your swing with a physical bat controller and watching for different pitch speeds; you also have the ability to steal bases, which plays out on a split-screen showing both the pitcher and the runner. The pacing is quick, with very little downtime between pitches, and the difficulty ramps up noticeably as the pitchers throw more breaking balls and change-ups. It feels immediate and physical, like you're actually in the box trying to read each pitch.
