Cosmo Genesis is one of those NES RPGs that slipped under the radar—probably because it never left Japan until fan translators got their hands on it. You start off as this rookie space explorer, and within minutes you're juggling planet-hopping, weird alien encounters, and turn-based fights that feel like a mix of Phantasy Star and early Final Fantasy.
The translation's got some rough edges (expect a few "all your base" moments), but that almost adds to the charm. What surprised me was how big it feels—you recruit this ragtag crew, each with their own weird abilities, and the synth-heavy soundtrack somehow makes grinding in space dungeons way more bearable than it should be.
It’s definitely a product of its time, but if you’ve got a soft spot for ambitious, janky retro RPGs, this one’s a trip worth taking. Just don’t expect the dialogue to win any awards.
