Remember those old arcade racing games where the cars felt like they were glued to the track no matter how hard you turned? Cruis'n USA is basically that, but for your N64. You’ll zip through cheesy-but-charming renditions of American landmarks—think Golden Gate Bridge with about eight polygons—while the soundtrack blares this weirdly intense MIDI rock.
It’s not exactly a sim, and that’s the point. The cars handle like they’re on rails (sometimes literally, if you hit a weird bump), and the AI opponents either rubberband like crazy or just give up entirely. But there’s something weirdly satisfying about bombing down a desert highway at 200 mph while dodging traffic cones and cows. The tracks get progressively more ridiculous, too—one minute you’re in Chicago, the next you’re weaving through redwoods or some neon-lit Vegas knockoff.
It’s pure, dumb arcade fun. Just don’t expect Gran Turismo.
