Game Overview

If you've ever wanted to golf like an anime protagonist, Dan Doh!! Tobase Shouri no Smile Shot is your weirdly specific dream come true. The first time I booted it up, I wasn't expecting much—just another GBA sports game, right? But then the bright, chunky pixel art hit me, and suddenly I was hooked on this cheerful underdog story about a kid with a ridiculous golf swing.

Gameplay's simple at first: line up your shot, hold the button for power, release at the right moment. But then the wind starts messing with you, the courses get sneaky with slopes, and before long you're sweating over a 10-foot putt like it's the finals. Nail it just right, though, and you get these over-the-top "smile shot" animations that make you feel like you just won the Olympics.

What I love is how unapologetically itself it is—no bland realism here, just pure arcade golf with anime flair. The music's peppy, the characters are goofy, and somehow it makes reading greens way more exciting than it should be. If you still dust off your GBA sometimes, this one's worth sliding into the cartridge slot.
