Game Overview
Dark Rift was one of those N64 fighters that tried to stand out in a sea of Mortal Kombat clones—and honestly, it kinda worked. The characters are wild (cyborg ninjas, demons, a dude with a sword for an arm), and the animations still hold up surprisingly well for an early N64 title. First time I played, I got wrecked by the ice wizard’s zoning attacks before figuring out how to close the gap with the samurai.
It’s not the deepest fighter out there, but there’s something satisfying about landing a flashy super move in the middle of a chaotic match. The multiplayer’s where it shines—grab a friend, pick the weirdest characters, and watch the screen dissolve into particle effects. Just don’t expect a tournament-level combo system.
If you’re into ‘90s fighters with personality, this one’s a solid time capsule.
