Game Overview

Dark Rift came out for the Nintendo 64 in 1997, developed and published by Vic Tokai. It was one of the earlier 3D fighting games on the system, arriving in a period when developers were still figuring out how to translate arcade-style combat into a home console environment. The game didn't have the same budget or recognition as some of its peers, but it carved out a space for players looking for something a little different.

You control one of several fighters, like the samurai Kenji or the cyborg Cron, and battle through a series of one-on-one matches. The main objective is to defeat each opponent to progress the story, which involves a conflict between the forces of Order and Chaos. Signature mechanics include a simple combo system built around weak and strong attacks, special moves executed with directional inputs, and the ability to sidestep around your opponent in the 3D arena. The pacing is methodical, with matches often feeling like a test of patience and timing rather than frantic button mashing; the difficulty can spike sharply, especially against later bosses who demand precise counters. It feels like a rough but earnest attempt to bring weapon-based combat into a new dimension.
