Devastators came out in 1994 as an arcade game from Konami. It was part of that wave of side-scrolling shooters that filled arcades in the early 90s, competing for quarters with a lot of other loud, explosive cabinets. You control a commando fighting through a dictator's forces in a war-torn country. Your main goal is to survive the relentless push from left to right, clearing screen after screen of soldiers, vehicles, and occasional boss encounters. The core loop involves mowing down enemies with your default UZI, then quickly swapping to the more powerful weapons they drop, like flamethrowers or rocket launchers, which are essential for dealing with armored targets. The level design mixes tight jungle paths with more open airfields, forcing you to constantly adjust your positioning. The pacing is fast and the difficulty is punishing; one mistake often sends you back to a checkpoint with a depleted arsenal. It feels like a constant, frantic scramble for better firepower just to stay alive.
