Game Overview

I first played Diablo on the Amiga back in 1983, a release from Brøderbund Japan. It was one of those early puzzle games that felt right at home on the platform, simple in concept but demanding in execution, fitting in with the kind of thoughtful, deliberate experiences that were common then.

You control the layout of a grid of pipe tiles, shifting rows or columns to create a continuous path for a rolling ball. The goal is to guide the ball through every segment of the pipe without letting it fall into the hole or roll off a blank space. Movement is indirect; you don't move the ball itself, but instead slide entire rows or columns of tiles, which pushes the ball along as the grid reconfigures. Later stages introduce screen wrapping, where the ball can exit one side of the screen and reappear on the opposite edge, adding a tricky spatial element. The pace is slow and methodical, but the difficulty ramps up steadily as the layouts become more complex and the margin for error shrinks. It feels like patiently untangling a knot, where each move has to be considered several steps ahead.
