Dick Tracy on the NES came out in 1990, published by Bandai. It was one of those licensed games that tried to capture a bit of the movie's style, fitting right into that era where every big property seemed to get an 8-bit adaptation. You control the famous detective himself, moving through a side scrolling city full of criminals and obstacles.
Your main goal is to solve a series of crimes by gathering evidence, which involves exploring the city screen by screen, talking to informants, and occasionally engaging in shootouts with gangsters. The game uses a lives and continues system, and you have to be careful not to shoot unarmed civilians or you'll lose a life. The pacing is deliberate, sometimes slow, and the difficulty can spike unexpectedly during certain enemy encounters. It feels like a straightforward action game with a light layer of detective work on top.
