Game Overview

Double Dribble: Playoff Edition came out for the Sega Genesis in 1994, developed and published by Konami. It was part of that wave of mid-90s basketball games trying to capture the arcade feel at home, sitting alongside titles like NBA Jam but with its own distinct flavor. The presentation was very much of its time, with digitized player sprites and a focus on fast, exaggerated action rather than strict simulation.

You control a five man basketball team, switching between players on defense and directing plays on offense with the goal of outscoring your opponent. Signature mechanics include the dramatic, screen-filling close up on dunks, which was a huge visual hook, and the ability to steal the ball with aggressive, almost reckless swipes that often lead to scrambling loose ball situations. The game moves quickly, and the AI becomes noticeably more aggressive and accurate during playoff mode, especially in the final quarter. It feels like a chaotic, slightly unpredictable arcade experience where a single possession can swing the entire momentum of a game.
