Game Overview

Driver 2 Advance came out for the Game Boy Advance in 2002, published by Atari. It was part of that early wave of GBA titles where developers were still figuring out how to translate console experiences to a handheld. The game tried to bring the open world driving and police chases of its bigger console siblings to the small screen, with mixed results.

You play as an undercover driver taking on missions across four cities, from Chicago to Rio. The main goal is to complete jobs, evade the law, and build your reputation. Key mechanics include free roaming to find mission start points, engaging in high speed pursuits, and performing specific driving tasks like tailing cars or causing timed destruction. The controls feel stiff and unresponsive, making precise maneuvers a constant struggle. Cars clip through each other during collisions, and the frame rate often dips during chaotic moments. Despite its flaws, there's a strange charm in pushing through the jank to complete a difficult chase. It feels like wrestling with a broken steering wheel, but occasionally you pull off something that almost works.
