Dungeon Magic came out in 1994 as an arcade cabinet release from Taito Corporation. It was part of that wave of isometric fantasy brawlers that showed up alongside games like Cadash, offering a more deliberate, exploration-heavy take on the genre compared to the side-scrolling beat 'em ups that dominated at the time. You didn't just walk right; you had to think about your positioning, your next room, your resources.
You pick one of four characters, each with a distinct weapon and magic specialty, and guide them through a multi-level dungeon to defeat an evil sorcerer. Movement is grid-based, screen by screen, with each new area locking you in until you clear all the enemies. Combat relies on timing your slashes or arrow shots, managing a limited magic meter for screen-clearing spells, and learning to dodge or block incoming attacks. The game is methodical, even difficult; you can't just spam attack and expect to survive. It feels tactical, almost tense, as you weigh each engagement and conserve your power for the bosses waiting deeper in.
