Eternal Champions came out for the Sega Genesis in 1994, developed and published by Sega. It was one of the more ambitious fighting games on the system, trying to stand out in a crowded genre with a unique premise and a darker tone than many of its competitors.
You choose a fighter pulled from different eras, each with their own reasons for fighting to change their fatal destiny. The main goal is to win matches and eventually defeat the Eternal Champion to earn a second chance at life. The game includes stage fatalities that are often elaborate and environmental; you can knock opponents into spiked walls, electrocute them, or trigger other deadly traps. It also features a combo system and special moves that require precise inputs. Matches can feel stiff and unforgiving compared to other fighters of the time, with a difficulty that demands patience. Landing a well timed special move or environmental kill brings a sharp, satisfying thrill.
