Eternal Champions came out on the Sega Genesis in 1993, developed and published by Sega. It was one of the more ambitious fighting games on the system, trying to carve out its own space against heavy competition from other franchises at the time.
You control one of several fighters pulled from different eras, each with their own unique moves and backstory. The main goal is to defeat your opponent in one-on-one combat across various stages. Signature mechanics include stage fatalities, where you can finish an opponent by knocking them into a deadly environmental hazard, and the Overkill move, a special finisher that requires precise timing. The pacing is deliberate, with a heavier feel to the characters than some faster fighters, and the difficulty can be punishing, especially with the complex input commands. It feels like a rough but earnest attempt to build a darker, more consequential world within the fighting game genre.
