Exzisus came out in 1987, an arcade game from Taito. It was part of that era where side-scrolling shooters were everywhere, trying to grab your quarters with bright colors and loud sounds. This one had its own look, a bit more detailed and fantasy-flavored than some of the pure sci-fi blasters next to it.
You control a small, humanoid character with a jetpack who is pretty vulnerable at the start. The goal is to survive through horizontally scrolling stages, shooting down waves of alien creatures and mechanical enemies. A key mechanic is collecting power-up orbs that transform your character into a much more powerful, traditional-looking spaceship with stronger firepower; getting hit while in this form reverts you back to the weaker jetpack state. The pacing is relentless, with enemy patterns that quickly fill the screen, and the difficulty ramps up in a way that feels demanding but fair for its time. It feels like a constant fight for survival where every power-up is a temporary relief.
