Game Overview

Ever played an RPG where your choices actually matter? Shin Onigashima is this weird little 1987 Famicom gem that got a second life on the GBA, and it’s still oddly charming. You’re basically navigating a Japanese folktale—demons, trickster spirits, the whole deal—but instead of grinding levels, you’re solving puzzles and picking dialogue options that actually change how things play out.

The first time I tried it, I got stuck for way too long on a riddle involving a stubborn old man and a rice cake. Classic 8-bit logic. The pixel art’s simple but full of personality, especially the goofy-looking oni (those’d be the demons). It’s short, maybe a couple hours if you don’t brute-force every conversation, but there’s something satisfying about outsmarting mythical creatures with nothing but quick thinking and the occasional well-timed lie.

Definitely not your typical RPG—more like a visual novel before those were a thing. If you’re into folklore or just curious about weird retro experiments, this one’s a neat little time capsule.
