Game Overview

Faria is one of those NES RPGs that flew under the radar but has this weird charm to it. You play as this sword-wielding heroine—pretty rare for an 8-bit game—wandering through towns and dungeons that feel just a little more detailed than your typical Dragon Quest clone. The combat’s first-person, which takes some getting used to, but the dungeons are top-down so you don’t get completely lost.

What stuck with me was how weirdly ambitious it was—there’s sailing, hidden caves, and even a day/night cycle. Sure, the translation’s rough (it was never officially released outside Japan at first), but there’s something about the way the music kicks in during battles that makes it hard to put down. Just don’t expect a walk in the park—some of those dungeons love their dead ends.
