Fate: Gates of Dawn is one of those old-school Amiga RPGs that feels like stumbling into a weird dream—which, fittingly, is exactly what happens to Winwood, the record shop owner turned accidental hero. One minute he’s napping on his couch, the next he’s stuck in a fantasy world where some mage named Thardan is ruining everyone’s day. Guess who gets voluntold to fix it?

If you’ve played Wizardry or Bard’s Tale, the first-person dungeons and turn-based fights will feel familiar, but with a few twists. You can recruit a small army—28 characters split into four parties—which sounds chaotic (and it is), but in a fun way. The day/night cycle actually matters: monsters skulk around less in the rain, so sometimes you’ll cast a weather spell just to avoid a fight. Little details like that make the world feel alive.

What really stands out are the classes. Sure, there are wizards and clerics, but also nymphs, banshees, and valkyries—each with their own weird abilities. Picking a team feels like assembling a D&D party if your DM had too much coffee. The races all have backstories too, though good luck remembering them all mid-combat.

It’s clunky in that classic ‘90s RPG way, but there’s charm in the chaos. Just don’t expect to wake up from this one quickly.
