Fate: Gates of Dawn is one of those old-school Amiga RPGs that feels like stumbling into a weird dream—which, fittingly, is exactly what happens to Winwood, the record shop owner turned accidental hero. You start off in this guy’s mundane life, then suddenly he’s trapped in a fantasy world where some mage named Thardan is ruining everyone’s day. Classic setup, but the execution’s got charm.

Gameplay’s first-person, turn-based, with that gridded dungeon crawl vibe from Wizardry or Bard’s Tale. What’s cool is how much freedom you get—you can recruit up to 28 characters and split them into four separate parties. I remember spending way too long at the start agonizing over whether to roll with a Valkyrie or a Banshee (went with the Valkyrie, no regrets).

The day/night cycle and weather actually matter, too. Cast a rain spell, and suddenly fewer monsters bother you. Little touches like that make the world feel alive, even if the graphics are very much of their time. There’s a ton of classes and races to mess with, so if you’re into party-building, this’ll keep you busy. Just don’t expect hand-holding—this is the kind of RPG where you’ll be scribbling notes on graph paper.

It’s janky in places, but there’s something oddly compelling about leading a ragtag group of nymphs and wizards through Winwood’s bizarre dreamscape.
