FIFA Soccer '97 on Game Boy is a stripped-down but weirdly charming take on the series. You’ve got 51 international teams (plus the fictional THQ Tornados, who are weirdly overpowered), but none of the club leagues from the console versions. The graphics are basic, and the commentary is nonexistent—just some chiptune crowd noise and the occasional whistle.
It’s got all the usual modes—Exhibition, Tournament, etc.—and the gameplay holds up surprisingly well for a Game Boy title. Slide tackles feel satisfyingly reckless, and the goalies react faster than you’d expect. Just don’t go in expecting anything close to the PlayStation version. This one’s for quick matches on the bus or when you’re nostalgic for that mid-’90s handheld soccer vibe.
