Sliding tackles feel weighty, pixelated players somehow pull off ridiculous volleys, and Motson’s commentary makes even your ugliest goals feel legit—especially in that janky but addictive indoor mode.

Game Overview

FIFA Soccer 97 on the Sega Genesis was one of those games where you could immediately tell they’d stepped up the presentation. Hearing John Motson’s commentary while Andy Gray broke down the action made it feel weirdly close to watching real football—even if the pixelated players still moved like they were on ice sometimes. The replays were a nice touch, letting you relive that accidental bicycle kick you somehow pulled off.

What I loved was how much you could tweak the rules. Want a chaotic, no-fouls arcade match? Done. Prefer a slower, more realistic sim with injuries and offsides? That’s there too. The indoor mode was a weird but fun distraction—six-a-side matches in what looked like a poorly lit gym, but hey, it broke up the usual routine. And if you had a friend over, the multiplayer kept things competitive (read: yelling at the screen).

It wasn’t perfect—David Ginola’s motion-captured moves looked slick, but everyone else kind of shuffled around like they forgot their coffee. Still, for its time, it got closer to the real thing than most.
