Flying Shark came out in the arcades in 1987 from Toaplan, a developer known for tough shooters. It was part of that era where you'd drop a quarter into a cabinet and hope to last more than a minute against overwhelming odds. The screen was always packed, a constant test of your reflexes and pattern recognition.
You control a small, blue biplane that scrolls vertically upward. Your goal is to survive each stage, destroying ground installations, tanks, and an endless stream of enemy aircraft. The signature mechanics are your two weapon types: a standard forward shot and a wider, more powerful bomb that clears the screen but is in limited supply. The pacing is relentless; enemies pour in from all sides, and their bullets fill the screen with tiny, deadly patterns. It feels like a desperate, constant scramble for positioning, a fight for every inch of airspace.
