Freddy Vs Jason (SMB1 Hack) is a weird little NES rom hack that turns Super Mario Bros. into a horror showdown. You play as either Freddy or Jason, running through familiar levels but with sprites swapped to match the theme—Freddy’s got his claws, Jason’s got the machete. The controls feel stiff, like the original SMB, but seeing these two stomp Goombas is oddly satisfying.
The levels are mostly unchanged, which makes it feel more like a reskin than a full reimagining. Some of the sprite work is rough—Jason’s mask looks like a blurry mess—but the idea of these horror icons jumping on Koopas is just bizarre enough to keep you going. It’s short, janky, and definitely a novelty, but if you’re into retro hacks, Freddy Vs Jason (SMB1 Hack) has its weird charm.
