Game Overview

Ganbare Goemon Gaiden 2 is one of those NES games that makes you wonder why it never left Japan. You play as Goemon—the pipe-wielding, coin-throwing hero—and his goofy sidekick Ebisumaru, bouncing through feudal Japan with all the weirdness the series is known for. Giant frogs? Check. Samurai mechs? Of course. The first level alone has you dodging rolling sake barrels while some guy in a kabuki mask laughs at you.

The controls feel smoother than the first Gaiden, and if you grab a friend, the co-op turns chaotic fast (Ebisumaru’s stretchy neck attack never gets old). Some of the later bosses are downright ridiculous—in the best way—and the chiptune soundtrack sticks in your head for days. If you’ve ever wanted to fight a sumo wrestler on a floating raft while a shamisen shreds in the background, this is your game.
