Gargoyle's Quest II came out on the NES in 1992, developed and published by Capcom. It was a time when action-adventure games were really finding their footing on the console, and this one stood out by giving you control of a character who wasn't your typical hero. You play as Firebrand, a red gargoyle from the Ghoul Realm, on a mission to reclaim his stolen powers and defend his home from an invading force.
You guide Firebrand through a mix of top-down exploration and side-scrolling action stages. In the overworld, you talk to other creatures, gather clues, and unlock new paths. The side-scrolling sections are where the game truly shines; you fly, cling to walls, and shoot fireballs at enemies. Your main goal is to recover your lost abilities by defeating bosses in fortresses, which gradually opens up the map. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty can be steep, especially during precise platforming segments. It feels methodical and rewarding to slowly master your movement and overcome each challenge.
