Gargoyle’s Quest II: The Demon Darkness is one of those Game Boy games that sticks with you—partly because Firebrand the gargoyle is way cooler here than in Ghosts 'n Goblins, and partly because it’s just so weirdly atmospheric for an 8-bit cartridge. You start off hovering over these bleak, shadowy landscapes, blasting enemies with fireballs, and slowly unlocking new abilities that let you reach hidden areas. The mix of side-scrolling combat and top-down exploration gives it this almost Metroid-like feel, but with way more gargoyle.

It’s not easy—some of those boss fights had me retrying way too many times—but the upgrades you earn (like higher jumps or stronger attacks) make progression feel earned. And the music? Unsettling in the best way. If you’re into retro games with a dark vibe and actual depth, this one’s still worth digging up.
