Game Overview

Gdleen is one of those weird, early SNES RPGs that feels like it was figuring things out as it went. It’s based on an anime OVA, so expect some 90s fantasy vibes—swords, magic, and a plot that makes just enough sense to keep you moving forward.

Right away, you’ll notice the combat’s turn-based but with this odd grid system where positioning actually matters. It’s clunky at first, but after a few battles, you start seeing little tricks—like keeping your healer in the back or baiting enemies into bad spots. The music’s got that classic SNES synth sound, and the sprites are chunky in a way that’s kind of charming now, even if they weren’t pushing the system’s limits.

It’s definitely rough around the edges, but there’s something interesting about playing an RPG that was basically the SNES’s first swing at the genre. You can tell later games learned a lot from its missteps.
