Gem Smashers is one of those GBA puzzlers that looks simple at first—until you realize how sneaky it gets. You control these little escaped prehistoric critters (Bau, Bam, or Bom) bouncing around single-screen levels packed with colored gems. Your job? Smash every last one. But here’s the catch: your creature can only break gems matching its current color, so you’ll be ricocheting off color-switch blocks (sometimes hidden behind breakable rocks) while dodging those nasty skull-marked death tiles. Mess up, and it’s back to the start.
The story mode’s got over 100 levels spread across a world map—you can tackle most in any order, but every zone ends with a boss that’ll test your timing. Pick a different creature, and you’ll start in a whole new section, which is a nice touch. Arcade mode’s more straightforward but still packs 60+ levels, and if you’ve got a link cable, the two-player battle mode gets chaotic fast. There are even a few secret modes to unlock if you stick with it. The music’s got that bouncy GBA charm, and the later puzzles? Let’s just say you’ll be sweating over gem placement.
It’s the kind of game where you tell yourself “just one more level” at 2 AM.
