Konami released Gradius 2 for the NES in 1988, a time when side-scrolling shooters were a staple of the console. It was a direct follow-up to the original Gradius, building on the same formula of space combat and upgrade-based progression that fans of the series already knew.
You pilot the Vic Viper through horizontally scrolling stages filled with enemy ships, turrets, and environmental hazards. Your goal is to survive each level and defeat the boss waiting at the end. A key mechanic is the power-up bar: collect capsules to advance a menu at the bottom of the screen, then activate your choice of speed boosts, missiles, lasers, or Options, autonomous orbs that mirror your shots. The game is notoriously difficult, with aggressive enemy patterns and limited continues, demanding precise movement and strategic power-up selection. It feels tense and demanding, rewarding memorization and quick reflexes with each narrow escape.
