Play Great Soccer (Japan) Online
Control a team of blocky players, move them around the field, pass, and shoot to score more goals than the opponent in this retro soccer game from 1985.
Great Soccer came out for the Sega Master System in 1985, developed and published by Sega. It was one of the earlier sports titles on the system, arriving at a time when home console soccer games were still figuring out how to translate the flow of the sport into something playable with limited hardware. The game offered a straightforward take on soccer, without the frills or licenses that would become common later.
You control a team of small, blocky players, moving them up and down the field to pass and shoot the ball. The main objective is to score more goals than the opposing team within the time limit. Passing requires careful positioning, as the ball doesn't always go where you intend; shooting feels imprecise, often relying on hopeful kicks toward the goal. Matches are slow, almost methodical, with a difficulty that comes more from the awkward controls than smart AI. Playing it feels like pushing weighted pieces across a board, where every small victory comes with a sigh of relief.
