Guwange came out in 1999 for arcades, developed by Cave. It was part of that late 90s wave of shooters that really pushed the hardware, focusing on dense, intricate patterns rather than just speed. You play as one of three characters, each with a unique shikigami spirit, trying to break a curse in a version of Japan overrun by demons.
You control your character directly, moving them on foot through screen after screen of enemies. Your main weapon is a standard shot, but the real strategy comes from your shikigami, which you can send out independently to attack or leave stationary as a shield. The game is methodical; you advance room by room, clearing each area of foes before moving on. The difficulty is punishing, with bullets filling the screen in complex, weaving patterns that demand precise positioning and quick use of your spirit. It feels like a constant, tense negotiation between aggression and survival, where every decision matters in the split second before a pattern closes in.
