Gyakuten Saiban, known as Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney outside Japan, came out on the Game Boy Advance in 2001 from Capcom. It was part of that early GBA wave where handhelds started handling deeper stories and more involved gameplay, moving beyond just arcade-style action. The game stood out for its focus on narrative and dialogue, something not every portable title attempted at the time.
You play as Phoenix Wright, a defense attorney taking on seemingly hopeless cases. The game splits into two main phases: investigation and courtroom trials. During investigations, you explore locations screen by screen, talking to characters and collecting evidence. In court, you cross-examine witnesses, pressing their statements and presenting contradictory evidence when their story falls apart. The pacing is deliberate, almost methodical; you have to pay close attention to every detail. It feels like untangling a knot, slowly and carefully, until everything finally makes sense.
