Gyrodine came out in the arcades in 1984 from a company called Crux. It was one of those many top-down shooters that filled arcades back then, a straightforward game about controlling a helicopter in a warzone. You control a small helicopter, moving it across a single-screen battlefield. Your objective is to survive while destroying all the enemy tanks, jets, and gun emplacements that pour onto the screen. The signature mechanics involve careful maneuvering to avoid a relentless hail of bullets while returning fire; you can also land your copter to change its color, which alters your firepower. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty is unforgiving, with enemy fire coming from all directions. It feels like a tense, claustrophobic dance where one wrong move ends your run instantly.
