Play Gyromite (World) Online
Guide Professor Hector through stages, collect dynamite, avoid waking Smicks, and adjust pillars to solve puzzles in this quirky NES classic.
Gyromite came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1985, developed by Nintendo R&D1. It was one of those early NES titles that felt experimental, especially if you had the R.O.B. the Robot accessory sitting on your carpet. The game didn't try to be an epic adventure; it was more of a quirky puzzle experience that showed off what the hardware (and its peripherals) could do.
You control Professor Hector, a small character who navigates single-screen stages filled with sleeping bird-like enemies called Smicks. Your main goal is to collect dynamite sticks scattered around each stage while avoiding waking the Smicks. The core mechanic involves pressing buttons on the controller to make red and blue pillars rise or lower, which either block your path or crush enemies. If you're playing with the R.O.B. accessory, it physically spins gyroscope tops to press those buttons for you, which is slow and often imprecise. The pacing is methodical, and the difficulty comes from timing your platform movements and pillar adjustments carefully. It feels like a strange, cooperative dance with either a patient friend or a clunky robot, and there's a peculiar charm in making it all work.
