Hats rain down two at a time—line up five matching ones before your mannequin heads disappear under a wobbly tower of cowboy hats and berets. That "just one more try" feeling hits hard when the conveyor belt starts sprinting.

Hatris is like Tetris, but way more stylish—instead of blocks, you're stacking hats on mannequin heads. Baseball caps, cowboy hats, even crowns come tumbling down two at a time, and you’ve got to match five of the same type to clear them. The first few levels feel breezy, but soon you’re juggling six different hat types while the conveyor belt speeds up. Mess up, and a tower of fedoras will hit the ceiling, ending your shift at the hat factory.
The NES version throws in a fun twist: clear enough of certain hats, and you can call in help from the game’s creators. One guy lets you swap columns, the other lets you yank hats from the bottom of a stack—lifesavers when things get chaotic. The Famicom version skips the helpers but adds a weird little hat-selling minigame between levels. Honestly, I miss the helpers more than I expected.
It’s one of those games that starts simple, then suddenly has you sweating over whether to prioritize party hats or top hats before the screen fills up. The money-as-score gimmick makes it feel like you’re actually running a weird little hat empire.
