Hatris on the Game Boy came out in 1990 from Bullet-Proof Software. It was one of those puzzle games that felt right at home on the handheld, a simple concept you could pick up for a few minutes or get completely lost in. It didn't try to be the next Tetris, but it had its own quiet charm that fit perfectly with the portable, monochrome screen.
You control a pair of disembodied hands at the bottom of the screen, catching hats as they fall from above. The goal is to stack five hats of the same type in a row, either horizontally or vertically, to make them vanish. The main mechanics involve rotating the falling pairs to fit your stacks and managing the ever-rising pile of headwear. The pace starts slow but quickly becomes frantic as the conveyor belt speeds up, demanding quick decisions. It feels like a constant, satisfying battle against clutter and gravity.
