Game Overview

Hero's Quest, later known as Quest for Glory I, came out on the Amiga in 1989 from Sierra On-Line. It was a clever hybrid of adventure and RPG that felt right at home on the platform, blending the detailed pixel art and storytelling Sierra was known for with the character building of a proper role-playing game. You weren't just solving puzzles; you were building a hero from the ground up.

You control a custom hero, choosing to be a Fighter, Mage, or Thief, and explore the valley of Spielburg screen by screen. Your main goal is to prove yourself and eventually defeat the brigands terrorizing the land. You improve your skills by practicing them; throwing daggers at a target raises your throwing skill, and climbing trees improves your climb stat. The game uses a text parser for interacting with the world, typing commands like "look tree" or "ask about brigands." It moves at a deliberate pace, with a day/night cycle and NPCs who follow schedules, and the puzzles can be quite challenging, demanding careful observation and logic. Playing it feels like you are genuinely training and growing into your chosen role, making every small victory meaningful.
