Game Overview

Hiryuu Gaiden came out for the Game Boy in 1990, developed by Lenar and published by Asmik. It was one of those late-era action platformers that tried to squeeze a little more out of the hardware before the Game Boy Color arrived. The game doesn't get talked about much now, but it had a certain charm if you were into methodical, screen-by-screen exploration.

You control a knight who swings a sword and eventually gains a bow to hit enemies from a distance. The goal is to explore a large map, clear out enemy-filled rooms, and gather key items to unlock new areas. Combat is deliberate; you have to time your strikes and watch enemy patterns, especially since some foes take multiple hits to defeat. The pacing is slow, and the difficulty can spike in later stages, but there's satisfaction in mapping out each screen and steadily gaining new gear. It feels like a careful, thoughtful crawl through a world that doesn't give anything away for free.
