Hot Potato! on the GBA is basically that moment in a sleepover when someone yells "HOT POTATO!" and suddenly you're all flinging a stuffed animal at each other like your life depends on it—except now the stuffed animal is a pixelated spud that might explode in your face. The Mode7 graphics give it this weirdly charming pseudo-3D look where the playfield tilts as you scramble to pass the potato faster and faster.
What starts as a chill back-and-forth quickly turns into absolute chaos when power-ups start flying. One second you're laughing as your friend gets stuck holding the potato during a speed boost, the next you're screaming because the controls reversed and now you're panic-throwing it directly into a pit. The AI opponents are surprisingly ruthless if you're playing solo, but it's at its best when you've got three other people all elbowing each other for the best throwing angle.
It's got that same "wait, one more round" energy as Mario Party minigames, but distilled down to pure potato-based panic. Just don't blame me when someone rage-quits after the third explosion in a row.
