Ice Climber came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1985, developed by Nintendo and published by them as well. It was one of those early NES titles that felt straightforward and a little rough around the edges, but it had a clear, simple charm that fit right in with the platform's growing library.

You control Popo, a small character in a parka, who climbs vertical stages by breaking blocks overhead with a hammer. The goal is to reach the top of each mountain before a condor flies off with your stolen vegetables. You jump between platforms, avoid seals and birds, and sometimes use vegetables to stun enemies. The screen scrolls upward as you climb, and the pace is relentless; if you're too slow, the screen pushes you off the bottom and you lose a life. It feels frantic and a little unforgiving, but there's a odd satisfaction in timing your jumps just right and making it to the next stage.
