Innsmouth no Yakata drops you into this grim, red-and-black nightmare of a mansion, where you're some trenchcoat-wearing detective in 1922 trying to escape with the Necronomicon. Yeah, *that* Necronomicon. You’ve got a gun, a ticking clock, and no idea what the hell’s waiting around the next corner—only that it’s probably some fish-faced monster that wants to eat your soul. The controls take a minute to get used to—twin D-pads on the Virtual Boy, one for moving and the other for aiming and shooting—but once you figure it out, the tension ramps up fast. Every floor is a maze, and you’ve got to hunt down a key and find the exit before time runs out. Do it fast, and you’ll be sent to a tougher path. Cut it too close, and the game bumps you down to easier levels. It’s got this weird branching level system that makes each run a little different. The map helps, but only barely—you have to uncover it as you move, unless you’re lucky enough to find one of those white orbs that shows the whole layout. Black orbs reveal item locations, which is handy when you’re running low on bullets or trying not to die from your last monster encounter. Speaking of, some of the creatures look like they crawled out of your worst seafood hallucination. You can fight or just book it—sometimes fleeing is smarter, especially if you’re cutting it close on time. Innsmouth no Yakata is honestly kind of claustrophobic in the best (and worst) way. The Virtual Boy’s red-and-black visuals only make everything feel more surreal and eerie. It’s not polished, but there’s something about its atmosphere and structure that really sticks with you. It’s weird, it’s experimental, and if you’re into creepy maze-running with real consequences, it’s worth digging into—just don’t expect a happy ending.
