Konami released Jail Break in 1986 for arcades, a time when side-scrolling action games were becoming more common. It was a straightforward game, not trying to reinvent the wheel, but offering a specific kind of challenge that felt distinct from other run-and-gun titles of the period.
You control a prisoner making a desperate escape, moving from screen to screen through a heavily guarded penitentiary. Your main goal is to fight your way out, shooting guards and dodging their return fire while being careful not to accidentally shoot the other inmates who are also trying to break free. If you hit a fellow prisoner, you lose your current weapon and are downgraded to a weaker pistol, a harsh penalty that makes you watch your shots. The screen advances automatically, and the pace quickens the further you get, forcing you to react faster and making every mistake more costly. It feels tense and unforgiving, a constant scramble against both the enemies and the clock.
