Konami released Jungler in 1981 as an arcade cabinet, a time when maze games were common but developers were still exploring how to make them feel distinct. It doesn't try to reinvent the wheel, but it has a particular kind of tension that sets it apart from other games of that year.
You control a multi-segmented creature, moving through a single-screen maze filled with enemy creatures just like you. Your objective is to shoot the tail segments of these enemies to shorten them; if you destroy their last segment, you eliminate them completely. The core mechanics involve careful positioning to line up a shot without getting trapped, and collecting power-ups that appear in the center of the maze to increase your own length and firepower. The pacing is deliberate at first, but it quickly becomes frantic as shortened enemies move much faster, creating dangerous, unpredictable chases. It feels like a cautious game of predator and prey that can suddenly reverse roles.
